The Importance of Security

E-mail Print

This really should go without saying, but your security is the most important thing in your life. I'm always amazed at people's flippancy towards their own security. For most people security is something that just happens, and it's somebody else's responsibility.

Well here's some news. It's your responsibility and nobody else's. If you screw up and get killed, you are the one who deals with the consequences. If somebody else screws up and you get killed, you are still the one who has to deal with the consequences. It doesn't matter if you could sue somebody, the ultimate consequences and responsibility are down to you.

Less dramatic security concerns are no different. You might not die, but you might lose money, maybe a lot of it. You might just lose face. In every case, it's down to you. If you slip on something and injure yourself, everybody seems to think about a no win no fee compensation claim. But it's more important to learn from your experience than it is to get compensation. You should learn to damn well look where you are going. You wouldn't have anyone to sue if you slipped in the desert, why is an office any different. I have no interest in today's compensation culture. 99% of these cases are down to personal stupidity rather than any actual negligence.

Don't try to blame others because of your own stupidity or lack of foresight. I like to treat everything bad that happens to me as my own fault. If somebody drives into the back of me, I must learn to be more aware of stupid drivers behind me. Obviously I still claim on their insurance, but there's something that I could have done differently to prevent it happening, so in part, it's my fault.

I have a friend that says that there are very few genuine cases of murder, most of them are actually assisted suicide. Either they got involved with a dodgy crowd that they should have known could possibly lead to their death, or they annoyed somebody that they should not have annoyed. Either way, it was avoidable, and hence it was their fault, and thus it was assisted suicide and not murder.

It's a bit tongue in cheek, but the principle is important. I don't intend to get murdfered so I won't hang around with violent gangs, drug dealers or the mafia. I'll try not to annoy the wrong people too. If I do, I'll have only myself to blame.

Business and investment security is an often misunderstood area. People think, how can you be secure when you are taking so many risks? And for a lot of investors, they aren't secure. I would encourage you to learn to manage risks. Taking risks is not about throwing caution to the wind, it's about managing the risk to maximise security. The Rich Dad Poor Dad series are big advocates of risk management in the fields of finance and investment.

A back up plan is essential. What happens if it all goes wrong? You should always have an answer to that. What if the investment fails and you lose everything? What happens if a burglar gets around your alarm? What happens if you've screwed up?

If you don't have an answer and a plan, you're destined to fail. Don't rely on chance, plan your security.
