Success

In this category you can find articles relating to success in various fields in life.

There are a couple of distinct themes.

Firstly, taking responsibility for yourself rather than waiting for the Government, or others, to help you out.

And of course, you actually need to be trying. If you keep on doing what you've always done, you'll keep on getting what you've always got. Don't be afraid of failure. If you're not failing every now and again, it's a sign that you're not doing anything particularly revolutionary.

Is there any point in trade unions in the 21st century?

E-mail Print

I'm writing this as the Royal Mail union have announced yet another national strike. This is on top of several regional Royal Mail strikes that are currently taking place. Not that anybody had noticed any drop in the level of service anyway :-)

Apparently, this time, they're striking because they want "job security". In the middle of the worst recession since the great depression, they're blaming a lack of job security on company management. This is a blatant kick in the teeth to everyone else who's lost their job recently, everyone else that paid attention at school and got a job worth having.

What's the difference between a screw up and a mistake

E-mail Print

I've always been a big advocate of making mistakes. Not intentionally of course. But if you're making mistakes, it's a sign that you're pushing the boundaries a bit, that you're expanding your horizons and are doing things a bit different.

Yet I know that you can never use this as an excuse for just screwing up. There is a difference between a mistake and screwing up and i've noticed that most people don't know the difference.

I'll use my younger brother as a good example.

The Importance of Security

E-mail Print

This really should go without saying, but your security is the most important thing in your life. I'm always amazed at people's flippancy towards their own security. For most people security is something that just happens, and it's somebody else's responsibility.

Well here's some news. It's your responsibility and nobody else's. If you screw up and get killed, you are the one who deals with the consequences. If somebody else screws up and you get killed, you are still the one who has to deal with the consequences. It doesn't matter if you could sue somebody, the ultimate consequences and responsibility are down to you.

Use audio books

E-mail Print

Whenever I link to a book on SelfImprovementExpert.com I usually try to link to the audio book* version. I thought I'd better explain why I do that.

Whilst having a standard paper copy of a book is nice and means that you can pick it up at any time and you can easily refer to parts of it, I believe audio books are much better for the self improvement books. A paper book is great for reading when you have nothing else to do or when there is nothing on TV, but an audio book* is far more versatile.

Perceived Security

E-mail Print

Security is a vital consideration in all aspects of life. I'm not an advocate of the ridiculous "health and safety" society that we seem to be developing, but security, real security, is vital if you want to be successful.
